MJW Increases Firewater Flow, Flexibility for BP Illinois Terminal // July 2017

MJW Consolidated recently completed the design and installation of new, custom-made fire protection equipment at BP petroleum storage terminal in Mokena, IL, to provide additional flexibility and flow capacity for the site’s firewater system.

MJW performed detailed system analysis and worked closely with the local fire department to determine the appropriate location, size and configuration for a new high capacity fire hose connection manifold, capable of supporting the targeted firewater flow of 7,600 gallons per minute.

Because of its size, the large-flow manifold required custom design and construction. The unit was built by MJW Consolidated fabrication shop in Titusville, FL, which also fabricates components for the NASA Kennedy Space Center complex. The Titusville shop completed the manifold on an accelerated 6-week timeline, enabling the entire project to finish a week ahead of schedule.

As always, safety was the focal point during the entire installation at this active storage tank terminal. The combination of safety, professionalism and efficient cross-disciplinary execution demonstrated why MJW is a preferred contractor for numerous specialized industrial clients in the US and abroad.


Boeing Chooses MJW for Cecil Airport Flight-line Shelter Project // June 2017

Erecting a flight-line structure close to an active airport apron presents special safety considerations, and Boeing has again chosen MJW Consolidated to meet those challenges at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville, FL.

After MJW performed successfully on two aircraft shelter projects at Cecil Field, Boeing showed its confidence in the company by awarding a contract for a third structure much closer to the airport’s two perpendicular runways, where safety considerations for managing traffic and eliminating foreign object debris (FOD) are paramount.

Work began in May on the project and is expected to be complete in August 2017. The large fabric-over-metal-frame structure, which will be erected by Big Top Fabric Structures, will house Boeing-made U.S. Navy F-18 fighter jets scheduled for program upgrades.

MJW is responsible for project management, including site preparation, building assembly oversight and installation of the complete electrical system for this structure, compressed air system to power the tools needed for work on the aircraft, and automatic compressed-air-foam fire protection skids with the flame detectors connected to the facility’s fire alarm system. MJW will also be installing a robust anchoring system that includes below-surface wire cabling to secure the building and deeply buried grounding points to tie-down aircraft.

As the work proceeds, MJW has assigned a full-time FOD manager to monitor the entire worksite for any debris that could be sucked into aircraft engines or turned into damaging projectiles by active aircraft traffic at this facility.
