MJW CONSOLIDATED MEETS TIGHT DEADLINE FOR ROCKTENN PAPER MACHINE REMOVAL
CHALLENGE
RockTenn, one of North America’s leading manufacturers of corrugated and consumer packaging, required removal and transportation of a full paper machine in just six months to meet a critical deadline. The company turned to Milton J. Wood Company to handle the project, which included match marking and removing certain paper machine sections; removing and scrapping other sections; and loading and transporting the saved sections on MJW trucks. The machine consisted of a base ply head-box, top ply head-box, top ply Fourdrinier section, base ply Fourdrinier section, press section, 71 dryer cans, calendar section, scanner, reel section, slitter/re-winder section, machine room floor staged roll removal, basement equipment removal, and mezzanine equipment removal.
SOLUTION
The project required the use of large rigging and machine-moving equipment, skilled tradesman and several large gang boxes of hand and power tools. To safely remove and load the machine, MJW mobilized equipment that included a 50-ton crane, three large forklifts, man lifts, machine-moving trailers, and work/storage trailers. The handpicked team included 18 of the company’s best tradesmen, a general foremen and a superintendent. The team calculated the weight of each section being removed and determined the lifting points and method of removal from the building. Once the machine sections were outside the building, the team planned the transportation, including the load configuration and permitting requirements.
RESULTS
Success is measured in several ways, with safety being the most important. The project was finished with zero injuries and zero near misses. In addition, the work was completed in five and a half months, well within the deadline.
